About Chloe’s Involvement

I was introduced to a form of this project during my freshman year at Colorado College. During my three-year involvement with the production, the most common feedback I received was that people wished they had had a show like this in high school.

Upon graduating from Colorado College, I took this feedback to heart and worked to adapt the project to a high school setting. I premiered my project at my alma mater in Austin, Texas and worked with three talented young women to produce Ships. Over the course of a year, I assisted these students in identifying relevant topics within the community and designing a survey exploring them, drafting a script, casting the show, and directing and producing the performances. These students were also talented filmmakers and independently wrote, filmed, and edited shorts that were included in the final performance. Ships was embraced by the community; students were touched by their peers’ words, parents were amazed by the emotional depth of the script, and teachers appreciated this insight into the lives of their students.

I love this project because—above all—it means so much to the students, providing them with an opportunity to explore and express their voices while sharing them with one another in a safe setting.

My long-term goal is to create a package that could be made available to any school interested in doing this project. My hope is that the project can provide a respectful venue for student voices and to create a meaningful experience for many more adolescent communities.
